SS UNITED STATES PREPARATION FOR REEFING: AFT STACK REMOVED TODAY
MOBILE, Al (Aug 8, 2025) From Okaloosa County..."The aft funnel aboard the SS United States was removed on Friday, August 8, 2025 as another major step in preparing the vessel to become the World's Largest Artificial Reef. The forward funnel was removed earlier this week. The remaining prop was also removed and loaded on the same barge as the aft funnel. These items, among many others are being preserved to be incorporated in the SS United States Conservancy's land-based museum.
All of the fuel aboard the vessel has been removed and the tanks are being steam cleaned. There is still a substantial amount of wiring that needs to be removed. These steps among many others are being taken to ensure an environmentally safe deployment of the vessel as an artificial reef which is expected to take place in late 2025."
